Health 1050 & Me

This spring semester was an enlightening experience for me. There was a definitive "call" if you will that I feel lightened the pathway towards my career direction. What does this have to do with my health 1050 class you ask? Well, let me have the pleasure to tell you how.

Like any other student who looks for classes for the coming semester, I found one course that I needed to take which was health 1050. Not thinking anything much of it, I prepared for it and once I received my book for the semester I did a quick look through just to see if anything familiar stood out to me. When it comes to health classes in my opinion, my first thought is something to the direction that it will tell me about how to eat right, maybe something about exercise and working out, etc. But to my pleasant surprise this class was not the case. In my direction towards my medical career, I quickly realized how much this class coincidentally related to my future. Im currently working my way up the ladder of the health care field. Educating myself at any opportunity to learn more about medicine and surgery. This class introduced me to the spectrum of licit and illicit (legal and illegal) drugs and substances and how it also coincides with how it has affected our society from history to the most current medical studies that have been done. I appreciate that it gave me more knowledge on mental health, substance abuse and addiction along with an in depth perception of some of the drugs used today in the medical profession, which was one thing I like the most. I'm a big fan of understanding the why and how things came to be. Some of the drugs mentioned within the book I have heard of by some of the nurses and doctors within my department, which made me dig deeper into my book to learn more. The fact is now I feel that gaining this knowledge allows me to recognize and be able to assist with the needs of patients I see now and to those I will help in my future. It's a reminder of how different our society is. In doing that it allows me to look outside the box of how I can care for different people. I can look at everyone individually to there needs because the reality is that not everyone is of the same faith, same culture, background and so on. It was a pleasure to take this class and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested to a introduction of medicine/drugs and the behaviors of our society. If you would like to read my research paper from this class, you can find on the main blog page right above the read more tab for the health 1050 blog post.
