This semester I can honestly say that this class has greatly affected me the most out of all the classes I have ever taken. During this time, I went through an enormous amount of change inside and out. I had changed jobs within my department. Now being in a new environment with new people, new responsibilities, and a new set of superiors, I was settling in and learning to adjust.
While semester went underway, one part I can clearly remember we were learning about communication, perception and culture. Me being with an all new group of people to work with, it helped me understand the way people can exist and communicate and how I can be self aware of how I communicate with them. I can tell you the great importance of doing this because I saw it before my own eyes. The way I do things and my own perspective isn't the same as everyone else's. I think that is really important. In my venture in my new career, it helped me in communicating to those who I am now teamed with. It gave me perspective on how I can learn something new about people, by listening to their views and in return learn a great deal of knowledge. Also one thing I must add is properly getting a message across. I learned that I had overly used filler words. In getting an important message across I imagined using words of importance in my message made it look important. But now I see it actually hinders the message and now at every time I talk or even express myself through a message I know better. Being in a new environment I think it's important to know these things because it can help me navigate my way to becoming a part of the team's inner-working family. Plus it also allows me to gain knowledge on how to approach my superiors if their is a situation that arises or I need to just speak to them one on one quickly.
I also learned how to overcome listening anxiety. I didn't realize that it was a thing that actually existed until I read it in our chapter book. I have dealt with this my entire life and it has been such a nuisance. In learning about how it can affect people like making them less motivated to succeed, I began to see how it had harbored me in my youth due to it. Now that I was in a new job as an adult, venturing to a new career path, I knew I had to overcome it. In my new job one of the most important task was to radio some very important information between multiple individuals. Allowing myself to face my fear of the anxiety, allowed me to focus more on the message and how to properly relay that message in a new system I created for myself. Now I can confidently say that it has helped me advance. I am not only more self aware but I am no longer fearful. Overall this class has helped me learn more about myself and the inner workings of those around me. I feel that I have grown in my communication skills and it has helped me in how I approach people, which is different now than from before. I feel like I have grown a great deal and I look forward to the new things in life that will head my way due to my new found confidence.
