Quality Education

UN Sustainable Development Goal #4

12th December 2019

OVERVIEW

Today in our world, it is estimated that over 72 million children of primary age education are not in school and 759 million adults are illiterate and do not have the skills or knowledge to improve their lives or those of their children. “700 million people live on less than $1.90 per day and a total of 1.3 billion people are multi-dimensionally poor.” (UNDP).

Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are typically forced to abandon their education due to the family's economic problems/hardships and to go to work to provide support for their family. “Factors linked to poverty such as unemployment, illness and the illiteracy of parents, multiply the risk of non-schooling and the drop-out rate of a child by 2.” (Humanium.org).

Education is connected to all of the UN Goals in one form or another. It fights poverty, creates gender equality, it can assist in economic growth and sustainability, and can lead to cleaner environments, etc. “People with more education tend not only to be more concerned about the environment, but also to engage in actions that promote and support political decisions that protect the environment.” (GEM).

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

On an international global scale other NGO’s like World Bank, collects and analyzes policy data on education systems around the world, using evidence-based frameworks to highlight policies and institutions that matter most to promote learning for all children (World Bank). Another example of an organization by the name of Childhood Education International, “works with organizations and groups around the world to inspire action that creates positive, sustainable futures for children and youth worldwide.” (CEI)

BENEFITS AND FEASIBILITY

An economy's productivity rises as the number of educated workers increases since skilled workers can perform tasks more efficiently. The knowledge and skills of workers available in the labor supply is a key determinant for both business and economic growth (Investopedia). Education decrease child marriages, and childhood mortality, and creates a more environmental education effect that produces more responsibility on the individuals that participate. “good quality education has the power to challenge traditional social attitudes and ensure that girls and boys know that they are equal.” (Oxfam, 2019, pg. 7).

DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED WORK

  1. Create an environment that supports global education, starting outside of the main cities working outwards towards the rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa where more than half of children receive an education that is less than 4 years.

  2. Lobby governments across the world to focus on education and provide data to show how it will increase their economies.

  3. Create and educational method that teaches about health/personal health, agriculture, economics, math, history, science, trade skills.

METHOD, PROCEDURE, THEORY

Create on the job training while obtaining education in a series of steps. While school is most important, a lot of chronic poverty families must have everyone in the family work in order to survive. Creating a new program that can teach and provide income for their parents as well. Communicating with local leaders, and farmers (or specific specialty trade that is available in their area) to initiate having volunteering activities such as gardening can assist farmers to get labor, families to get work and experience.

Teaching the children outside the classroom with such activities to learn about how they can provide for themselves. Starting this program open and free to the public with a signup roster for the first 100 families and have a waiting list. Their voluntary services can provide growth and income to themselves and their families while still providing support toward their families education.

COST, RESOURCES REQUIRED

As an initial start up we will be requesting the amount of $25,000. Together with UNESCO, this amount will cover supplies for teaching materials, attracting teachers of quality, and provide the center location for the school.

UNESCO is the chosen organization because of its work encompasses educational development from pre-school to higher education and beyond. Which also includes global citizenship and sustainable development, human rights and gender equality, health and HIV and AIDS, as well as technical and vocational skills development (UNESCO).

With lobbying governments and community leaders to also support our endeavor, we will advance the community, advance health for all and allow them to grow economically. We will also be requesting the government's approval and support to grow this movement towards success towards outer regions. “People’s lives are better when government is efficient and responsive. When people from all social groups are included in decision-making that affects their lives, and when they have equal access to fair institutions that provide services and administer justice, they will have more trust in their government.” (UNDP).

Conclusion

In conclusion, approaching these development goals with a strong will and UNESCO’s support, this proposal has the approach of resilience to grow by way of education. It can fight poverty and illiteracy, childhood marriages, inequality, create environmental responsibility and so much more. With your support, it will help in leading the way for a brighter future for all.
